Floating Chalk Print

MATERIALS

  • 8x12 or larger shallow plastic or metal pan filled with water

  • colored sidewalk chalk in various colors

  • popsicle sticks

  • water paper or any white paper

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. take one colored chalk and scrape it with the popsicle stick (like shaving a carrot) over the pan of water

  2. repeat step one with a different color chalk multiple times

  3. use as many colors as you’d like until you have a rainbow of colors from edge to edge of the pan in the water

  4. bend the white paper like a letter “U” and sit it in the chalk-filled water

  5. do not push it below the surface of the water, let it float on top

  6. when the edges of the paper start to curl, lift the paper out of the water

  7. hold paper over the water and gently “tap dance” on the back of the paper to push off excess water

  8. lay on a table to dry

  9. when dry, do not touch with fingers or it will smear and smudge

  10. OPTIONAL to spray it with a fixative or Aquanet to set the chalk in place

  11. OPTIONAL you can use your paper as a background to a picture. Use a black marker to draw a picture over it. Try to only do the outline of your picture/shapes, so it pops.
